At Rural Mutual Insurance, we have been protecting what we value in Wisconsin since 1934. Our reputation as one of the top 50 property and casualty companies in the country was built delivering on that promise exclusively for Wisconsin farms, businesses and families. We have a network of more than 150 agents in 100+ locations across the state. Our agents live and work in your communities. We understand your needs and work as hard as you do to ensure you are well-protected with coverage that is best for you. We prevent situations from becoming problems. Because we only do business in Wisconsin, we make sure that premiums paid here, stay here to keep Wisconsin strong. Since our founding, we have been headquartered in Madison.
Our History
Our company was formed in 1934 in Madison by the Wisconsin Farm Bureau Federation to provide low-cost auto insurance to Farm Bureau members. Seeing our customers’ needs for additional protection, we worked to expand our offerings. First, we offered broader farm insurance, including fire, wind and hail crop damage protection. Then we expanded to offer additional protection for farm families and businesses in the communities we serve. We adopted our current name in 1957 when the Rural Mutual Casualty Insurance Company merged with the Rural Mutual Fire Insurance Company of Wisconsin. Reflecting our commitment to the communities where we work, in 1965 we partnered with the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) of middle and high schools to sponsor the WIAA/Rural Mutual Sportsmanship Award. The award recognizes one school that displays exceptional sportsmanship in each team tournament.

For the seventh year in a row Rural Mutual Insurance Company has earned a Financial Strength Rating of A+ (Superior). Rural Mutual is one of seven single state insurers in the U.S. and the only single state insurer in Wisconsin to receive an A+ rating.
