The P.A.S.S. Fire Extinguisher Method
Remember the phrase P-A-S-S if you attempt to put out a small fire with an extinguisher.
P is for pull the pin of the extinguisher;
A is for aim low. Point the extinguisher nozzle at the base of a fire;
S is for squeeze the handle;
S is for sweep from side to side at the base of the fire. If the fire re-ignites, repeat the process again.
Tips to follow when responding to a fire
- Pull the fire alarm and call the fire department, if appropriate.
- Identify a safe evacuation path before approaching the fire.
- Evacuate immediately if the fire progresses.
- Evacuate immediately if the extinguisher is empty and the fire is not out.
Always keep an eye out for fire hazards on the farm including broken light fixtures, exposed electrical wires, loose outlets, wet hay, clutter of flammable materials and obstructed exit pathways. Keep fire prevention tips top of mind with your family, staff and visitors.
